Attractive foliage remains evergreen in the deep South turning to reddish-purple in fall, with subsequent leaf drop in the northern regions where it will grow. A truly magnificent vine that deserves a spot in every landscape where it will grow. The hummingbirds will thank you for planting this vine! Landscape & Garden Uses Growing up to 30 feet in height or length (however tall or long the support structure) and 4 feet or more in width, the Shalimar Red Crossvine is ideal for use to climb on and literally cover fences from top to bottom! Rather than grow along just the top of a fence, the vines cascade all the way down to the ground to entirely cover the fence! Also ideal for use to cover a trellis, arch, arbor, pergola or any other structure that will support the vine. A fine addition to hummingbird and butterfly gardens, red theme gardens, tropical look gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs). Suggested Spacing: 3 to 4 feet apart to cover fences Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Bignonia Crossvine variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. That said, this vine grows quickly so you might have to cut it back some before bringing it indoors. Growing Preferences The Shalimar Red Crossvine is exceptionally easy to grow in most any average, moist but well-drained soil of average to low fertility. It grows in full sun or shade however flowers heavier with more sun. We recommend at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for full flowering. Plants are quite drought tolerant when established. Pruning isn't necessary, however the vines can be pruned after flowering to keep tidy.
