Description

This is the single-trunk tree form version of the Ruffled Red Magic Crape Myrtle, a truly spectacular mid-size variety selected for its ability to produce loads of flower clusters in a rich, true color...and this one doesn't disappoint. When in bloom, it will blow you and any who see it away with its abundant, large clusters of carnation-like, glowing orange-red flowers over a long period in summer. If the first round of flowers are deadheaded Ruffled Red Magic will produce another flush of flowers late summer through mid-fall! The foliage on Ruffled Red Magic emerges red in spring transitioning to dark green through the warm season. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in late fall the leaves turn to vibrant orange and red shades. It is a vigorous grower, doubling in size during each of the first two years, though we think it will slow down over time. It has demonstrated excellent resistance to powdery mildew, even in the hot and humid summers we have here in north-central Georgia.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to 13 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Ruffled Red Magic Crape Myrtle Tree is ideal for use as a specimen in most any size landscape and home foundation plantings. Two can be used to frame an entryway. Can also be used in spaced groupings or rows or in large containers. Whether planted as a specimen or in groupings, this is one crape that is sure to stand out in the landscape!

Suggested Spacing:  Best as specimen or two to accentuate an entry though can be planted in spaced groupings or rows to line a drive or landscape border.

Growing Preferences

Ruffled Red Magic Crape Myrtle is very easy to grow. It is not picky about soil type provided the soil is well-drained. A moist but well-drained soil of average fertility is preferred. Full sun is preferred and results in heavier flower production. Light shade is tolerated but flowering will be diminished in more shade. Has shown excellent resistance to powdery mildew and is quite drought tolerant when established. Prune in late winter. How To Prune a Crape Myrtle Tree the Right Way
