Budded branches can be cut and brought indoors for display in flower arrangements. The flowers are followed by small, round dark red fruits that the birds will enjoy. After the bloom attractive oblong, pointed green leaves emerge holding through fall at which time they turn to outstanding yellow shades with the arrival of cooler temperatures. At around 5 feet tall and wide, this beauty is an excellent addition to a sunny flowering shrub border. Afghan Bush Cherry is a larval host plant to Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly. You may see three flights from February through November in the deep south and two flights from May to September in the north. The birds will thank you for the small red fruits. Landscape & Garden Uses Growing upright to 4 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide, the Afghan Bush Cherry is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a hedge in sunny landscape or flowering shrub borders. It is a fine addition to a sunny to lightly shaded flowering shrub borders, pink theme gardens, butterfly gardens, cottage gardens and cut flower gardens. Growing Preferences The Afghan Bush Cherry is very easy to grow. It is not picky about soil type or pH preferring a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. Full sun is preferred however plants will tolerate some light shade. We suggest at least 6 hours or more of direct sunlight per day for best flowering. It is highly tolerant to urban conditions. It does not require pruning, however damaged or crossing stems can be removed for shaping purposes. In the summer, after fruiting, you can also prune to shape the plant. Plant Long & Prosper!
