Description

While most Deodar Cedars have pendulous branches, Patti Faye has a unique horizontal branching habit and foliage color similar to the Blue Atlas Cedar with an almost perfect Christmas tree shape with no pruning necessary. Her new needles emerge a silvery-grey color turning to a rich blue green. A classic conifer with outstanding performance all across zone 7 and south to zone 9b, Patti Faye loves the sun and is exceptionally low maintenance and drought tolerant, but give her plenty of room to grow as she tops out at 50 feet or more in height and 20 feet or more wide. Ideal for use as a specimen or in privacy screen plantings.

Landscape & Garden Uses

With an upright habit and pyramidal form 40 to 50 feet tall and 20 to 30 feet wide, Patti Faye Deodar Cedar is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, as a background, or in tall privacy screen plantings in large landscape borders. Really nice near lakes and other bodies of water and around large boulders. Young trees can be grown in large containers but will eventually need transplanting to the landscape. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, blue theme gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  15 to 20 feet apart for privacy screens; 35 feet apart for space between trees

Growing Preferences

When planted right and in the right spot, Patti Faye Deodar Cedar is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained to dry soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. Established trees are exceptionally drought tolerant. As with so many other coniferous evergreens, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Good drainage is essential. Some shade is tolerated however trees won't be as full. Exceptionally low maintenance requiring no pruning except to remove a stray or damaged branch.
