Description

Japanese Umbrella Pines are an unusual conifer to begin with, but 'Joe Kozey' is a unique one that will frequently draw looks and questions from folks despite the competition. Sciadopitys verticillata ‘Joe Kozey’ is an extraordinary cultivar with an upright and narrow columnar for forms a spire to around 20 feet in height and 5 feet wide. We love the interesting thick and rubbery needles of this species that come in upright facing whorls at the end of the stems. Its tighter habit and sturdier stems helps Joe to stand up better to snow than other other cultivars. An outstanding specimen that will fit in smaller spaces but grows large enough to be a focal point in larger borders and rock or conifer gardens.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a narrow columnar for to 20 feet high and around 5 feet wide at maturity, the 'Joe Kozey' Japanese Umbrella Pine is ideal for use as a focal point specimen that is sure to draw attention. Its narrow form will fit in and add dimension to small garden spaces where wider cultivars won't fit. A fine addition to conifer gardens, Asian theme gardens and rock gardens.

Spacing:  We suggest using as a specimen

Growing Preferences

Joe Kozey Japanese Umbrella Pine prefers a consistently moist acidic to moderately acidic soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for best performance. No pruning is necessary to maintain its columnar form.
