Incrediball is an improved Hydrangea arborescens most adored and prized for its incredibly enormous flower clusters. Talk about a conversation piece, Incrediball produces nearly basketball size flower heads up to 12 inches across! In summer, the flowers emerge soft green gradually turning to white and then back to a darker green in fall. The strong upright stems are more than able to bear the weight of the gigantic blooms, even when its raining, which makes them excellent for cutting and use in fresh or dried flower arrangements. The deep-green foliage provides an excellent backdrop for the blooms. This selection is also incredibly cold hardy withstanding temperatures down to -40F in USDA Zone 3. At our location here in north-central Georgia Zone 8a, we've found that Incrediball will appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the hot afternoon hours, but we hear it will tolerate more afternoon sun in Zones 3a-6b. Being a North American native species, Hydrangea arborescens (Smooth Hydrangea) are some of if not the easiest to grow in the U.S.. Landscape & Garden Uses Growing in a rounded mound 4 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide, Incrediball Hydrangea is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a colorful hedge in landscape and woodland borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, cutting gardens, white theme gardens and cottage gardens. Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 8 or more apart for space between plants Growing Preferences Incrediball Hydrangea is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun to part shade in cooler northern zones 3 to 6 and part shade (morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun) in warmer southern zones 7 to 8a. For best flowering, we suggest 4 hours of direct sun light per day. As with so many other ornamental plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. Pruning Tip: In early spring, just as the new growth begins to emerge on the stems, cut the plant back by about one-third its height. That's it!
