Topping out at about 5 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide, Glen St. Mary forms a dense, rounded shrub clothed in evergreen leaves emerging a bronzy color turning to silver grey and then to grey-green with a metallic gold color on the undersides. In fall, clusters of small white flowers produce a delightful perfume that fills the garden with intoxicating aroma. Small reddish berries follow the flowers and are a favorite treat for birds. Exceptionally easy to grow in sun or shade and drought and salt tolerant, Glen St. Mary makes for an excellent specimen, grouping, or hedge in landscape borders or an accent shrub in home foundation plantings. Landscape & Garden Uses Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide depending on pruning, Glen St. Mart Silverberry is ideal for use to quickly form a natural or clipped formal hedge, though we like it best left to grow natural. It is also a nice accent in home foundation plantings with a color and texture that contrasts nicely with most other plants. Elaeagnus is a fine addition to fragrance gardens, bird and wildlife gardens, cottage gardens, silver/grey theme gardens, shade gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs). Suggested Spacing: 4 to 5 feet apart for solid hedges; 10 feet or more for space between plants Cultural Preferences Elaeagnus is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average to low fertility and full sun to mostly shade. Foliage is more dense with more sun. Elaeagnus is very drought tolerant when established and also salt tolerant. It responds well to pruning and shearing for size control, hedges and other shaping purposes.
