Description

Giant Silver Mullein is an architectural plant that makes a bold statement in the garden....one simply can't miss it! The plant forms a rosette of very large silver-grey, felted leaves that are up to 2 feet in length. From this rosette rise tall, slender, felted, almost-white stalks adorned with pretty, sulfur-yellow flowers the bees, butterflies and hummingbirds will thank you for planting. A very attractive plant in the garden with color that brings out the best in other plants around it.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing up to 6 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, Giant Silver Mullien is ideal for use as a specimen or in small grouping in sunny perennial borders that have well-drained soil. Can also be grown in large pots. A fine addition to butterfly and pollinator gardens, rock gardens, Xeriscape gardens and silver or yellow theme gardens.

Growing Preferences

Giant Silver Mullien is very easy to grow in a moist to somewhat dry well-drained soil and full to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Well-drained soil is essential! The plant will not tolerate constantly soggy or wet soils. During the season, spent flower stalks can be removed to encourage more new stalks. Though not a long-lived perennial (maybe 3 years), if you leave a few flower stalks at the end of the season the plant will self sow. Seedlings that appear may be easily moved and can be thinned to about 2 to 3 feet apart.
