Description

Winner of the American Conifer Society's Collectors' Conifer of the Year award in 2019, Filip's Golden Tears Lawson Cypress is one of if not the most spectacular varieties of all Chamaecyparis. A fast grower adding up to 2 feet in height per year, it forms a majestic weeping column up to 20 feet tall and 3 feet wide at the base at 10 years of age and maybe 30 feet at maturity. Its weeping branches are clothed in feathery fans of golden yellow foliage that mature to green. The combination of both colors on the tree at the same time is truly fascinating. A dramatical exclamation point for the landscape as a specimen, in spaced groupings, or two can be used to accentuate an entryway.

Landscape & Garden Uses

The Filip's Golden Tears Lawson Cypress is ideal for use as a focal point specimen or in spaced grouping with plants arranged at least 10 feet apart to avoid overcrowding. Also excellent as an accent tree to frame corners or accentuate an entryway in tall home foundation plantings. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens Asian gardens and yellow theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 10 feet apart for space between trees

Growing Preferences

The Filip's Golden Tears Lawson Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. It has good drought tolerance when established and does not like a constantly wet or soggy soil. It is exceptionally low maintenance, requiring little if any pruning to keep its naturally narrow form. That said, a wandering arm can be removed if desired.
