In late winter or early spring, the branches become literally smothered in pea-like bright purple flowers creating a dramatic color display in the landscape. But this tree's beauty doesn’t end with the spring flower show. Immediately after flowering its beautiful, heart-shaped bright green leaves emerge to warm your own heart. The leaves mature to an olive green and then finally to golden-yellow in fall before dropping to show off the very handsome, spreading and often flat-topped crown of unique and irregular grey branches. Grows well in sun or shade! Landscape & Garden Uses Growing upright with an irregular rounded form 20 to 30 feet tall and wide, the Eastern Redbud is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny or shady landscape or woodland borders. Also nice to frame the corners of tall homes and to provide beauty and some shade around patios, porches and other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to purple theme gardens, native gardens, woodland gardens and cottage gardens. Suggested Spacing: 30 feet or more for space between trees Growing Preferences The Eastern Redbud tree is very easy to grow in most any average, moist but well-drained soil and full sun or shade. It is very drought tolerant when established. Standing water or constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic.
