Description

Unique in every way, meet the Confederate Rose, a wonderful hardy Hibiscus recognized for its fall display of gorgeous flowers of many colors on the same bush, bold foliage, impressive stature and form, and cold hardiness to as far north as USDA Zone 7a.

Unlike most hardy Hibiscus which bloom in summer, Confederate Rose produces its large and beautiful, peony-form flowers during the fall season. In our north-central gardens the flower buds start opening in October continuing all the way through late November to early December, depending on the weather. What's really neat is how the flowers change color after opening. They open pure white then gradually turning to darker shades of pink until ending up a deep rose-pink to nearly red. Because buds open at different times the result is all these different colors on the same plant at the same time. Truly a spectacular sight to behold!

But the flowers aren't the only impressive attribute of this Hibiscus. The bold, 7 to 8-inch wide soft and fuzzy green leaves, shaped and sized somewhat like those of the sycamore tree, serve as the perfect backdrop to the flowers while also providing a tropical effect in the garden spring to frost. The Confederate Rose would be an impressive texture plant in the landscape without the flowers. Growing 10-12 feet tall and almost as wide, it surely won't go unnoticed. This is one beauty that deserves a spot in every landscape or garden where it has room to grow.

For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Zone 7a, where this Hibiscus variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in large containers that can be brought indoors during the winter months and placed back outdoors when temperatures rise in spring.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 10-12 feet tall and 8-10 feet wide, the Confederate Rose Hibiscus is ideal for use as a focal point specimen, in groupings, or as a seasonal hedge in sunny landscape borders and garden beds. It also serves well as a backdrop for lower growing plants in flower gardens. Suitable for growing in large containers and a fine addition to perennial gardens, cottage gardens and tropical-look gardens. For those who live north of USDA Zone 7a, where this plant is not reliably winter hardy, containers can be brought indoors during winter.

Spacing: 8 feet apart for solid hedges; 16 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Confederate Rose Hibiscus is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility in full sun to part shade. Flowering will be heavier with more sun. Though drought tolerant when established, plants will appreciate an occasional good deep soaking in the absence of rainfall during summer. Maintenance is minimal, just one pruning a year. In early spring, just when new growth begins to emerge, we cut the stems back to just a few inches or so above the ground. When temperatures warm in spring plants new stems will shoot up quickly to 10 feet or more in height!

Many years ago I was given a small Confederate Rose. I loved this plant. We have moved and I wanted to get one for my new house. I couldn’t find one in my area at all. Wilson Brothers had them on their website, but we’re out of stock. I’m always nervous buying site unseen, but when they finally got some in stock they contacted me. I had been searching and looked at a few plants that I was told were what I was looking for. They weren’t, so when I got notice Wilson Brothers had some in stock, I ordered one. It arrived within a week. It was in great shape. I replanted it and it is growing nicely. I honestly think I might see flowers this fall. It’s been a challenge to keep things watered here in Texas. Restrictions make it a little problem and our rain is just nonexistent. I cheat a bit and find new leaves daily. Can’t wait! This company is great! The plant was very well packed and arrived in good condition. For the first few days, some of the leaves turned yellow and dropped, but the plant revived after a week and is now thriving. The product is however, somewhat more expensive than the competition, but the price is well worth it. Good morning, received plants that are excellent specimens. They will be housed in an area that stays about 45 to 50 degrees until early spring here in central Tennessee. The last one i purchased thrived and is just beautiful every fall. Sadly its outgrown its location and will have to be transplanted in the spring. Wish me luck. My confederate rose hibiscus arrived in the best possible condition. The plant has multiple branches and is a very nice size. . . very much worth the price paid! Due to a hectic week at my house, I was not able to plant it in the ground for about 5 days. One of the branches broke off in shipping but it was a large plant and so far is thriving. My Confederate Rose arrived today. First, it’s worth mentioning how well packaged the plant was for shipping. The box was configured so the stems and leaves were protected and there was no danger of loose soil falling out of the container during the rigors of shipping. Secondly, the plant stock was very healthy and I do not have any concerns about its future in my garden. My husband first saw this plant in a yard facing the golf course he was on. DH was mesmerized by its beauty. He asked the homeowner what the plant was. I just want to thank you for the beautiful Confederate Rose that I ordered for my son and his wife who just purchased their forever home and love gardening. Had my concerns about the shipment of a Hibiscus Rose from North Georgia. But, you guys need to train others on how to package for shipping. Two 3 gallon Confederate Roses received in a cardboard container that allow chance of the plants shifting or getting damaged. Can’t say much about the damage my loving wife did to our “buried” (what fool dies that without warning) phone/internet cable. At least the technician found the problem easily (hole already dug for him) and repaired it quickly and THANKED us for making his job easy(?) Sorry, happy to say both plants are now transplanted in a regal place for a royal display when blooming. I was a little leery of ordering a plant on the internet because I wondered what condition it would arrive in. I was happy and surprised to receive this big, beautiful Confederate Rose Hibiscus ?? plant in perfect shape in the mail! It shipped so quickly too. I can't wait to see it bloom. The Confederate Roses are just beautiful and arrived very quickly, were packed well and in good condition. They were about 5’ high and easy to just remove from the pot and plant immediately. I have wanted a Confederate Rose since I saw one as a little girl...that's been a long, long time! The plant was not happy to have been in the dark box, but perked right up after placing in the shade and a good watering. It lost some leaves, which I expected. It is covered with new leaf buds. At first I thought this plant was a bit pricey, but then I found the price was in range of all online nurseries that carry it.... which is very few. Excellent packaging for mail, arrived just fine. Larger than expected. Watered when it arrived. Next day leaves were drooping.. Rechecked your grow instructions, they say moist soil. Put drip pan under. Watered again until pan filled, and all is good! Your information is like an easy library and accessible 24/7. Turns my brown thumb green!! The Confederate Rose plants we ship in early spring are just emerging from winter dormancy so will often look mostly like bare branches with small leaves starting to emerge from them. As you discovered, it doesn't take long though for the leaves and new branches to start to grow and the plant to look much better. By the end of spring you should have a very nice and full shrub with large leaves and then some flowers in fall.
