Description

If you're looking for edible plants that are easy to grow and take up little space, definitely consider raspberries. They are self-fertile plants that will produce fruit even if only one plant is grown.

With superior heat and humidity tolerance, disease resistance, larger fruit, better flavor, and heavier production, the Caroline Raspberry gives the popular Heritage Raspberry some serious competition.

Caroline was released in 1999 by the University of Maryland and has set the standard for everbearing (aka fall bearing), primocane-fruiting raspberry varieties. As it has an everbearing fruiting habit, the plants produce berries on old canes that ripen in early summer, and on new canes that ripen from late summer until frost, which is relatively late compared to some other varieties. Caroline produces tall, rugged canes with vigorous, upright growth, and it "suckers" (spreads) rapidly, quickly enhancing both the size of the bush itself, as well as the potential quantities of harvestable berries. The raspberries have an attractive, deep red color, very good flavor and firmness, and they have demonstrated good freezing qualities, as well.
