Description

A stately herbaceous perennial plant that is sure to draw attention in the garden from both people and butterflies, Bronze Fennel, also called Copper Fennel, is an upright plant to 5 feet tall with billowy, smoky purple plumes of feathery, anise scented and flavored leaves and seeds, both of which are commonly harvested for use in cooking. Large, flattened umbels of tiny yellow flowers rise above the foliage from early to late summer followed by aromatic seeds. A butterfly host, both the foliage the flowers are very attractive to swallowtail butterflies.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to 5 feet tall with a spread of 2 to 3 feet, Bronze Fennel is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings or as a background in sunny herb gardens and perennial borders. Also a very nice centerpiece in combination container gardens. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, cottage gardens, purple theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 2' to 2.5 feet apart for groupings; 6 feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Bronze Fennel is easy to grow in most any moist but well drained garden soils of average fertility and full sun to light shade. It performs best in organically rich soil. Constantly soggy soil is problematic.
