Description
Pinus parviflora 'Aizu Goyo' is a rare, unique selection of Japanese White Pine. It is a sculptural beauty reaching 6 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide with naturally tiered and spaced, gracefully curving branches, giving it an airy appearance. Clusters of distinctive, slightly curved, soft, soothing, silvery-blue to blue-green needles enhance its ethereal appearance and texture. Developing more character as it ages, Aizu Goyo is a fantastic, long-lived addition to rock, conifer, and Asian-themed gardens. It is suitable for containers and a fine candidate for bonsai. It thrives in coastal environments due to its salt tolerance, and is listed as cold-hardy to USDA Zone 5a. Sure to be a captivating conversation piece.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide at maturity, the Aizu Goyo Japanese White Pine is a captivating specimen in sunny landscape borders or as an accent tree in home foundation plantings. It is an excellent candidate for containers and Bonsai. It is a fine addition to rock gardens, conifer gardens, blue theme gardens, and Asian and Zen theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen
Growing Preferences
The Aizu Goyo Japanese White Pine grows best in moist, well-drained, fertile soil in full sun but tolerates some light afternoon shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Constantly soggy soil can cause problems with the roots, so make sure to plant it in a well-draining site. It does not require pruning; however, it responds well to it when creating topiary forms and for bonsai.
