Each flower produces up to 36 petals that are less floppy than M. stellata, resulting in a waterlily-like appearance, hence the name. Before the leaves emerge, the flowers open from rose color buds that are perched at almost ever stem tip on the tree. Waterlily Magnolia has dark green foliage throughout the season that turns from yellow to coppery-bronze in fall.
