What's more, in mid to late summer magenta flower wands tower above the foliage turning to fluffy white plumes as the season progresses, setting off the vibrant fall foliage. The plumes are great for cutting and use in dried flower arrangements. The slender grassy blades originate in a clump, spreading out and up like a fountain to 4.5 feet tall in bloom and only 3 to 3.5 feet wide. Though not considered a dwarf, Flame Grass makes for a lovely vertical accent in smaller garden spaces and containers or in showy groupings or natural hedges where space allows. That said, a constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Maintenance is minimal requiring only an annual pruning before new growth begins to emerge in late winter or very early spring.
