Its slow growth rate and smaller stature make it a fine choice for the smallest of gardens. Its unique texture and rich, delicate, curvy fans of dark green foliage accentuates plants with lighter colored foliage and is especially nice near Japanese maple trees and in Asian and rock gardens. We have found that it will appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the hot midafternoon hours in USDA Zones 7 and 8 but takes the full all day sun further north to Zone 4. At least 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day or all-day very lightly filtered sun is suggested. Constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic. Avoid overwatering. Provide only enough water to keep the soil damp to moist. Established plants growing in the ground are quite drought tolerant and will only require an occasional watering during prolonged periods of drought.
