It was named for the small red margins on all the new edible shoots. It has beautiful green canes with long nodes. The canes are a handsome olive-green color with fine reddish striping and the culm sheath borders have pronounced red margin. The beautiful canes are sought for use in arts and crafts. The long spaces between the nodes can reach up to 22 inches on mature canes. A majestic giant with bright yellow canes and random dark green stripes of varying widths is distinctive and truly remarkable. It is the most cold hardy of the large timber bamboos and establishes very quickly. The oral setae and auricles are absent from the culm sheaths. There is also white pin striping on many of the green leaves. A fast grower to 60 to 70 feet tall in warmer climates and maybe 30 to 40 feet in cooler climates, this bamboo forms a grove of large, 5 inch diameter culms. The packaging was the most secure I have ever experienced. The packaging attention shows a level of quality that mirrors their plants. It isn't too tall and is one of the strongest and most upright making it the perfect choice for a dense privacy screen or hedge, even close to walkways and driveways. The strong, upright canes are green but will turn golden-yellow when exposed to direct sun light. Golden Bamboo is a fast grower that you can expect to reach 15 feet tall or more in USDA Zone 6 and 25 to 30 feet tall in zones further south. The stand is thick and impenetrable for a dense tall hedge or privacy screen or as a specimen in large containers.

Golden Bamboo loves the sun but will also grow in part shade and is hardy to 5°F. Golden Bamboo bamboo will drop foliage when temperatures drop to around 5 degrees F. Canes can be killed when temps drop to -5. Thank you again.--------------------------------------------------------You're welcome! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! :) Beth Steele | WBG

This fishpole bamboo plant and two other bamboo I ordered arrived as such happy plants—lush and meticulously packaged. No sooner was the fishpole in the ground than it sent up three perfect shoots, all larger than the original cane. I put a ring of chicken wire around it temporarily as a sign to nearby critters that the salad bar is closed …. But a day later I had to cut a section out of the wire to allow for the rapid and slightly angled growth of one of the shoots. I also ordered an arrow (japonica) and giant leaf bamboo and they are doing fine, too.. The former is very tall with a consequent fragility but it got here with no bends or breaks, 8 or 9’ tall. I feel confident that anything I order from Wilson Bros will be great. That’s not true for all nurseries in the southeast. I ordered a root clump of black bamboo from another placed with two T’s in the name and it was dead from the start. I spend a year trying to get a replacement but could never prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it was, in fact, dead. I failed to provide a certificate from the plant coroner. Anyway, enough of that. I will have to work hard to stop myself from ordering more plants from Wilson Bros this year.------------------------------------------Thanks for the kind words and awesome review! They came well package in tall cardboard boxes. The plants arrived very fast and in healthy condition. In contrast, at the same time I ordered another variety of bamboo from a different online nursery and they came folded up in smaller boxes with broken culms and didn't seem as healthy. That was a bit disappointing. I will definitely be ordering from you guys at Wilson Bros Gardens again for all my plant needs.------------------------------------Thanks for the photos! It will tolerate some shade but the culms are not as erect in shaded sides as some other species and tend to weep or arch over. Therefore, the more sun the better. When established, most bamboo will tolerate periods of dry weather, however, will appreciate an occasional deep soaking if the leaves begin to curl from drought distress. It is a very fast growing but well-behaved, which means it doesn't spread like running bamboo. It will quickly grow 6 to 10 feet tall and then gradually spreads to form a rounded clump 6 to 10 feet wide. It has a dense, slightly weeping habit with willowy foliage that is a very graceful specimen in the landscape. It is also useful in groupings or as a mid-size hedge. In USDA Zones 5-7 it can be grown in full sun but we suggest some shade in the afternoon in Zones 8-9.

Landscape & Other Uses

Containers/Pots: Excellent

Crafts: Good

Edible: Too small

Hedge: Excellent

Indoor: Good - PLEASE SEE: How To Grow Bamboo Plants Indoors

Ornamental: Excellent

Privacy Screen: Good

Wood Quality: NA

Growing Preferences

Sunset Glow Bamboo grows well in most any average garden soil and full sun to part shade in USDA Zones 5-7 and shade or part shade in Zones 7-9, where it prefers some afternoon shade. I was worried because I live on the other side of the country from them and sometimes live plants don’t do well in the long transport, but they got here in under three days And the way it was packaged was genius. They had the planter of the plant stapled to the bottom of the box so it would not shift around,
I received two giant bamboo plants, they were babies and we’re not cut off at the top and they were in beautiful condition. When I remove them from the planter, I also noticed there was two or three shoots already starting.
I planted them in the recommended soil, look on their website they have instructions and best soil, and I’ve been faithfully watering them and they’re doing so good not a lot of growth but it’s the first year and we’re past the middle part of summer already so I wasn’t expecting a lot of growth This year but long story short I’m very happy with my purchase, the plants are beautiful and healthy. It came in a large planter with moist soil.
If you’re looking for giant bamboo, I think you found the right place. Trust me I’ve spent probably six weeks looking for giant bamboo, I even bought one off of Facebook marketplace, but it ended up being a scam so watch yourself there, Wilson brothers gardens did a great job I highly recommend them.
I’ve had the plants now for about three weeks and I added the pictures so you can all see how it’s doing.------------------------------------------------Thanks for the photo, kind words and awesome review! It is very popular in China where it is called Vegetable Bamboo. The tasty shoots are used in salads, soups, stews and stir-frys. But that's not all this species is prized for. Sweet Shoot is also prized for its attractive canes and foliage. Arching, soft green to blue-green culms with occasional white rings grow to 40 feet tall, even in the coldest zones where it will grow. Occasionally there are yellow stripes running up the culms. The 3-inch culms have large diameter for their height and develop thick canes without the incredible height of other Phyllostachys. It performs well and gets big canes in smaller and tighter spaces. The lush foliage consists of creamy white new leaves that age to olive green forming thick, drooping clusters. This one is cold hardy to -10 degrees F and can grow close to full height even with those temperatures. Sweet Shoot is a quick growing bamboo, making it a great choice for a screen, hedge or grove.

Landscape & Other Uses

Containers/Pots: Good, large pots and planters

Crafts: Excellent

Edible: Excellent!

Hedge: Too tall

Indoor: Too large - PLEASE SEE: How To Grow Bamboo Plants Indoors

Ornamental: Good

Privacy Screen: Good

Wood Quality: Good

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Bamboo variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

Sweet Shoot Bamboo grows well in most any average well-drained moist to dry soil and full sun to part shade.
